"Control" by Mute Math

OH. MY. GOD.

I saw Mute Math live for the first time last night. I don’t think I have ever been so blown away by a new band. One of the best shows I have EVER seen. I’ve been hyping this band since before I even had a blog, so if you guys don’t know who they are yet, you must be living under a rock. Their album comes out today so you should ALL buy it. I promise you won’t be disappointed.

They opened the show last night by playing before the curtain opened. When it finally did and the lights came up, the lead singer was standing on top of his keyboard with his arms in the air. The first chord of “Typical” was so loud that the floor was vibrating. For the entire show, the band jumped all around the stage, ran around the audience, played each others instruments. There literally was not a single dull moment. They closed the show with every member playing a drum, while the guitarist played his pedal board. They didn’t close with their single, they closed with instrumental awesomeness. Then they came back out for the encore. The encore was another instrumental in which they proceeded to smash the fluorescent tube light bulbs (that made up their set, lining the back of the stage) with a drum stick and then a stool. They gave their instruments to the crowd to play. The lead singer ran a lap around the venue. When they went off stage and the curtain came down, everyone was booing since the show was over… But wait! Just as the curtain was about to hit the floor, the lead singer slid underneath and asked the crowd if they wanted one more. Stupid question. The band came back out and played a second encore to finish up an already amazing show.

If I had to categorize their live performance, I would say they are a combination of Coldplay and The Vines (2 of my favorite bands to see live). The entire crowd was clapping above their heads (especially to the song I’m posting today), just like at those European festivals, for the entire show. If I had the power to sign bands right now, this would be the band I would sign. Luckily, 3 people from my office, all higher up than me and with the power to sign pretty much anyone (head of creative?), were there as well. Hopefully good things will happen for this band. I don’t see how they could not. If I haven’t thoroughly convinced you, check out the MySpace and watch this:

p.s. Oh, and they filmed the entire show last night (swoopy crane camera and all - can you tell I never took advantage of USC’s fantabulous film school?) which I’m assuming is for a DVD. You can live my experience vicariously through that when it comes out :)

Wow Linds, they sound like they use an interesting mix of music. If they sound like Coldplay and the Vines, I believe they would be worth checking out. I’ll be looking for their CD. Thanks!
