I was SO excited the day this album was released. I listened to it ALL day at work. And look how long it’s taken me to post it. Not saying that it’s bad… but I like Logic Will Break Your Heart a LOT better. I read a review that said the band has re-invented themselves with this album. I’m not sure on that one. It’s not a completely different sound or anything… Maybe other people think so. I wonder if this re-invention will help them break? Personally, I think the last album was more commercially friendly, but it didn’t sell too well. Anyways, I really like this song. A few others are good… “Helicopters,” “Oh Shoplifter,” “In the End,” and “In the Beginning.”
If you’ve never heard of The Stills, I highly suggest getting their old album. I mean, pick up their new one if your little heart desires, but I’m partial to the old stuff. I have a history with this band. I fell in love with them, was SUPER excited for their show, and then I get my fake taken at the door (Mom and Dad, I really meant my very valid state issued driver’s license… just a typo) and was turned away from the show! I literally cried in the alley after we tried to sweet talk the guard at the back door and were denied. So naturally, when they went on tour again, I bought tickets but had nobody to go with… strike two. FINALLY, I ended up seeing them at the Wiltern and was blown away. They were GREAT live and had the coolest screen behind them with all these little floating images that went along with the songs (see the third video below). They were here about a month ago but the show sold out super fast and I didn’t get to go. I looked for tickets on eBay and they were going for about $90 a piece with a face value of $18. Hopefully I can catch them next time they’re out here…
Ok, back to the old songs… Get “Changes are No Good,” “Love and Death,” and “Yesterday Never Tomorrows.” The rest of the album is stellar as well. And I’m curious to hear if I’m just biased. For those of you who have heard neither album, will you let me know which one you like better? and if they really sound different to you? Have a listen to a few new songs on their MySpace and here are a few videos from the old album:
p.s. That girl in the second video is so me with how into her job she is… minus the creepy guy staring at her. Bonus factoid: that girl is the girl from the band Metric. I should put them in here too, they’re good. Another bonus factoid: The Stills are from Canadia… which means they’re AWESOME. I’d like to move there and start saying eh? Who’s coming with me?

ah, the Stills…brings back so many memories of EVIL EVIL old security guards who are on a power trip even though we will make double their salary by the time we’re 30. Not that I’m bitter or anything. I haven’t had a chance to hear their new cd yet, but “Lola Stars and Stripes” is one of my faves!
