"Waves" by Marjorie Fair

Is it bad that I work at Capitol and still hate major labels? Because I do… Especially when bands like this fall victim to the system. Now this band may or may not be dropped (i.e. I don’t want to lose my job… and still may with my clever hinting technique, but whatever), so let’s just acknowledge that they’re not selling well and Capitol is not happy about it.

Here’s some background: Marjorie Fair was a new band on Capitol that put out their debut CD last summer. I got the sampler when I first started working here and liked it. I was actually surprised that Capitol would sign a band like this. They didn’t have any clear singles (on the sampler - “Empty Room” was added later) and it was just good music - nothing flashy or gimmicky. I wasn’t sure I could picture it on the radio/MTV, and apparently nobody else could either. But nonetheless, it’s still good music.

Some of you hipsters may have skipped over this entire post because this band may or may not have just gotten the axe and therefore probably won’t help your new music quotient. But for those of you sticking around, this is awesome study/chill music. “Waves” is my favorite and was tapped to be the 2nd single. It’s a great song… Listen to it driving in warm weather with the windows down and you’ll feel quite relaxed :) The first single was “Empty Room,” but I’m not a huge fan. I really like “Stare” - quiet and a little bit dark. For some reason it reminds me of “Like a Stone” by Audioslave. They don’t sound alike really, just something about it… Anyway, you can hear all 3 songs on their MySpace.

So there you have it. Probably not your new favorite band, but some good music to listen to. Makes me wonder who else is on Capitol’s shit list. Ya know, you’d think that they’d drop the rapper (excuse me, R&B singer) who decided he was Jesus and poked his own eye out… Guess they don’t really care about eyes or talent…
